7 Things that God Hates
Proverbs is all about wisdom and knowledge and will literally have you getting your WHOLE life together. It tells us how God wants us to act as a son, daughter, mother, father, wife, husband, and friend, in all situations. Proverbs is a mood!!
Last Sunday, we studied the 7 things that God hates. Although we know that God IS love; we also know that He hates sin, because it separates us from him. (1 john 3:6-10)
Proverbs 6:16-19;
16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Let’s go through each and look at what they mean.
A proud Look- simply put, pride. The world will have us thinking that we should think highly of ourselves and our accomplishments or the things that we have- self confidence, self- love, self-worth. In actuality, our confidence, worth, and love should be found in/through Christ. God wants us to walk humbly so that he can exalt us and get the Glory. (Proverbs 11:2)
A lying tongue- John 4:24 says that we are to worship God in spirit and in truth. All throughout the Bible, God talks about the power that is in our tongue. The power to speak life or death. Lying perverses the truth. (Proverbs 12:22)
Hands that shed innocent blood- There are many scriptures that reference innocent blood. In most scripture references it seems as though it is talking about killing innocent people. (Proverbs 1:10-19)
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations- This is specifically pertaining to wicked things done in secret. (Ezekiel 8:12) God sees and knows everything! Even our thoughts.
Feet that be swift in running to mischief- evil activity; Isaiah 59:7 says their feet run to evil… (Micah 2:1-2)
A false witness that speaketh lies- We already read that God does not like liars. The difference between “a lying tongue” and a false witness is this action directly affects another person in a negative way. A false witness is being de ceitful in a way that intentionally harms someone else. (Exodus 23:1)
He that soweth discord among brethren- My Bible translated this phrase into one word; Busybodies. (That translation took me out!) A busybody is a meddling or prying person that goes about to stir up strife. 1 Timothy 5:13 says; And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. That sounds like gossip & God hates it!!
We want to stay away from everything that looks like any of those 7 things.
Micah 6:8- He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
