Godly Esteem (for children)
As we all know, raising children of God is no easy task! And as a mama of 3 (I know a family update is long overdue!) I am constantly looking for ways to teach/show my kids how to be Christ-like. Combatting culture and the ways of the world is hard- especially because following Christ is not “normal” or cool!
Brief update on my kids- King just graduated VPK and will be starting Kindergarten in August, Karsyn is turning 4, August 13th, and will be in VPK. Kofi, our newest addition, is 6 months old and is still going to the babysitter.
Because my kids are so young, they are in the crucial stages of development where their personalities are starting to form, their character is being developed, and they are very impressionable. The things that I say (and what others say) to them or about them, can have lasting effects! Which is what led me to this study. I want my kids to have confidence and Godly Esteem, knowing that they were made in the image of Christ and that he has the perfect plan for their lives if they trust and follow him!
So! Lets get into it!
I have been giving my kids memory verses every other week and they have been focused around being confident in who they are in Christ. Here are a few scriptures that I think are beneficial for them to have written in their hearts (Hebrews 8:10).
Philippians 4:13- “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Christ is invincible! All power was given to him! (Mt. 28:18). We in ourselves are weak and frail, but God, through his strength enables us to be conquerors.
Isaiah 41:10 says to fear not, God will strengthen thee, help thee, and uphold thee.
I let my kids know that they can do ANYTHING with God's Help! Whether learning how to ride their bike with no training wheels or overcoming something they are afraid to do.
Psalm 139:14- “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
In this verse, fearfully is Hebrew and it means great reverence, heart-felt interest, and with deep respect. God was so intentional when he created our children. He doesn’t make mistakes!
Ecclesiastics 3:11 says that he has made everything beautiful in his time.
Letting our children know that God created them in his image and predestined them so that they can feel secure in who they are is so important! I don’t want the world telling my kids who they are!
This next scripture is a good follow- up
Psalm 149:2- “Let Isreal rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.”
Joy is a fruit of the spirit and is promised to the believers. I want to teach my children to have JOY in all situations (James 1:2-3).
When they have faith in God, they can have joy knowing that all things will be worked out for their good! This world can be heavy and burdensome! Lets teach our children that they can have joy and happiness in Christ.
But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”- Matthew 19:14 (NKJV)
