A Guide: How to Seek God
This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, oh Jacob. Selah.
- Psalm 24:6
I have been wondering what it means to seek God in real-time practice?
I wanted an easy, clear, simple way that can be applied to anyone today.
Life is busy. We have work, some have school, some have kids, some have husbands…some of y’all have all of the above (Deep sigh… VIVIAN).
How can we seek God diligently in our everyday?
You already know we need to define… SO let’s get into it.
In the Greek Concordance To Seek is to search out - especially through worship and prayer. To strive after, to ask, to beg, beseech, desire, to make inquisition, request, require. It’s to worship, be about, to search for something hidden.
I pulled out a few words from this - desire, to ask, to search…
To desire means to have a longing for - to invite, to crave.
When I read seeking God means to invite in - Revelation 3:20. Wow, the Creator wants us to invite him in.
To search for something hidden - This fellowship is a secret and has to be searched out. Everyone doesn’t get to commune with God.
The Bible gives examples of four ways on how to seek God: Obedience, Prayer & Supplication, Fasting, and Worship
1. OBEDIENCE.
Scriptures: Psalm 27:8 ; John 15:10 ; 1 John 2:4-6 ; 1 John 3:6
To know God’s will, you MUST read this Bible!
When you study his word - you set the atmosphere, you prime the ground for some good seeking. When you have questions, search the scriptures -this way you can be obedient unto Him, and John 14:15 says obedience is how you show God you love Him.
Here’s your how: Set aside private study time. (This is in addition to church service yall!)
Try to start with just 30 minutes - WeeeeEarly mornings are best! - if this is too much, start with 15 minutes.
If the first point is still too much (for now), roll over, open your PHYSICAL bible, and read 1 chapter before your day starts and 1 chapter before you close your eyes to sleep.
If you’re not there yet, pick one scripture, one verse to read in the morning and meditate on it throughout the day (Practice actively meditating on the scripture- repeat it, tell someone about it, sing it, memorize it, pray about it, understand what it means and apply it).
I promise you - the more you read and learn of Him, your desire will grow into a craving for the word. You will also notice when you are slacking - you will feel it.
2. Prayer and Supplication
Scriptures: Daniel 9:3-4 ; Psalm 5:3 ; 1 Thessalonians 3:10;
Prayer is how we commune with God. Bring your questions, your weight, your worry, your shame, your contrite spirit, your repentance, your reverence, and leave it with God in prayer. Fight your worst battles, tell your deepest secrets, pray and intercede for others, cast down your enemies, glorify, and give thanks in prayer.
Full transparency: I don’t pray enough - this one’s for me. There is POWER in prayer.
Here’s your how: Set aside time to pray each day. Be diligent and defensive about your time!
Hit your knees first! roll out of bed and immediately fall to pray- early mornings are best! - Mark 1:35 (No Phone)
If you have kids - set 10 minutes each day to pray with them, and show them how to pray. Be consistent! Kids do well with routine. They will remind you when you forget!
Phone a friend - get a prayer partner that you call in the mornings and pray together (the scripture says where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst). If you are married sis - morning prayers with your husband ARE KEY!
Set an alarm on your phone for prayer time in the middle of the day, and stop what you are doing - pause and pray.
We previously wrote a blog on the conditions of a successful prayer. Read it here!
3. Fasting
Scriptural Instruction: Joel 1:14; Joel 2:12; Matthew 6:17-18
Scriptural Examples: Ezra 8:21; Ezra 10:6; Exodus 34:28; Daniel 10:3; Luke 4:1-2; Acts 9:9
When the Bible speaks of fasting…it means no food or drink. So, when we refer to fasting here, we mean no food or drink, sis.
Here’s your how: Sacrifice time and turn down your plate. Just do it.
Pick 1 day per month and do a 24-hour fast OR a 6 am -6 pm fast (you will work your way up to more)
Pick 1-2 days every 2 weeks and do a 6 am - 12 pm fast
Pray and ask God to put you on a fast that He calls! (sometimes we can get so caught up in doing acts - we forget to ask God what He wants!) Maybe he wants you to fast for 1 hour. Just ask Him! (Read Isaiah 58:6-8)
Here is the caveat - be intentional about the fast. Try to be spiritually minded during this time - focus on prayer, stay off your phone, keep the TV off and seek God. If you are at work, listen to worship music, actively pray in your thoughts. Don’t count down or think about the time (VERY hard to do). Think about the morning scripture you read, and how you are applying it. Think about the person you work with who needs prayer and lift them up. Think about the country you live in - that needs prayer and pray. Think about the evil principalities that we war with EVERYDAY and cast them down. It will be hard - but the reward, the clarity of God’s voice, the joy - it’ll be worth it.
And just an FYI - Fasting, as the bible has said (Matthew 6:16-18 KJV) gets Heaven’s attention. IYKYK
4. Worship
Scriptures: John 12:21; Psalms 96:9; 1 Chronicles 16:29; Luke 24:52-53
In 2021 we wrote a blog on True Worship… See here!
Here’s your how: Walk it out.
Pick a song in the morning and sing it out loud unto God —don’t play music over your voice. Lift up an anthem of praise from you. Meditate on it throughout the day (hum it).
Actively monitor how you speak to people (What is your conversation? Are you kind? Is there strife?). The scripture says “worship him in the beauty of holiness...”,
Ephesians 4:29 says no corrupt communication should proceed out of your mouth. How you talk to people is a form of worship to God.
Praise and Worship, we all love lol its the BEST. Play some songs throughout your day! Music is how we fight battles. When circumstances arise….getchu some headphones and play you some praise!
Okay, sis! This was a lot! But I am hoping you can pull 1-2 (or more) things and add them to your seeking (or use this as a refresher to get back to seeking).
Without Christ, we are nothing… so seek Him, that he may be found!
With love,
